It has been a bad year for the misunderstood/ underappreciated genius. Syd Barrett, Grant McLennan and most recently, Arthur Lee are no longer with us, but the death of Tony Ogden, the brains behind World of Twist seemed particularly sad. Like his contemporary, Lee Mavers of The La’s, Ogden’s activities since the release of World of Twist’s only album in 1991, have been sporadic, limited to reported sitings of him in Manchester video shops. A second album was apparently demo-ed including a version of Jimmy Webb’s McArthur Park) but maybe it was better that it never saw the light of day – World of Twist were perfectly of their moment. It was brief and glorious. Here’s a link to the 12″ version of Sons of the Stage.
